SMEC Canberra

SMEC required a strategic workplace design in Canberra to solidify its market position and accommodate rapid local growth. The objective was to create a destination workspace that surpassed competitors and authentically celebrated the firm’s identity.

Key challenges included:

• Brand disconnect: The previous office lacked connection to SMEC’s engineering legacy and Canberra’s national significance.
• Capacity constraint: The growing team had outgrown the existing footprint.
• Talent attraction: A compelling workplace was needed to attract and retain top engineering talent in a competitive market.
• Market leadership: The new spaced needed to reinforce SMEC’s reputation as a pioneer of Canberra’s engineering industry.

Spaceful’s strategy focused on translating SMEC’s extraordinary engineering history into a workplace that celebrates its people, culture, and pioneering identity.

Strategic goals included:

• Heritage integration: Drawing inspiration from SMEC’s defining project, the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme, to ground the design in its engineering roots.
• Talent attraction and retention: Creating a mix of workstations and inviting communal areas to encourage collaboration and support diverse work styles.
• Spatial efficiency: Maximising the 600sqm floorplate with flexible zones and neighbourhood planning.
• Innovation showcase: Integrating smart office technology and amenities that position SMEC as a forward-thinking industry leader.

The design draws directly from the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme, one of SMEC’s earliest and most significant achievements. The modern industrial aesthetic celebrates Australian infrastructure through robust materials and refined detailing.

Steel, concrete and tile recur throughout, complemented by mesh ceiling tiles and perforated gyprock for texture. Exposed black-painted ceilings evoke a tunnel-like atmosphere, while suspended LED baton lights recall mine lighting.

Key design features include:

• Brand experience: A bespoke history wall guides visitors from the entry through to the workspace, showcasing milestones from SMEC’s founding in 1949 to today, and turning the firm’s legacy into an immersive experience.
• Convertible spaces: The main breakout area features a large communal table that doubles as a ping-pong table, while the primary meeting room’s operable glass wall allows conversion into a town hall venue.
• Diverse work settings: Zones support both focus and collaboration, anchored by a central communal space for daily activity and training events.
• Innovation and wellbeing: Electric sit-to-stand desks, self-check-in reception, LED lighting, a state-of-the-art kitchen and a wellness room combine comfort and technology to enhance the employee experience.

Delivered in just ten weeks, the project transformed SMEC’s Canberra office refurbishment (workplace) into a best-in-class environment that embodies innovation, heritage, and collaboration. The result is a workplace that not only supports growth but has reinvigorated team pride and engagement.
