SMEC required a strategic workplace design in Canberra to solidify its market position and accommodate rapid local growth. The objective was to create a destination workspace that surpassed competitors and authentically celebrated the firm’s identity.

The design draws directly from the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme, one of SMEC’s earliest and most significant achievements. The modern industrial aesthetic celebrates Australian infrastructure through robust materials and refined detailing.
Steel, concrete and tile recur throughout, complemented by mesh ceiling tiles and perforated gyprock for texture. Exposed black-painted ceilings evoke a tunnel-like atmosphere, while suspended LED baton lights recall mine lighting.

Delivered in just ten weeks, the project transformed SMEC’s Canberra office refurbishment (workplace) into a best-in-class environment that embodies innovation, heritage, and collaboration. The result is a workplace that not only supports growth but has reinvigorated team pride and engagement.
