The Client

Headquartered in Sydney, Bartier Perry is a leading Australian law firm with a proud 80-year history.

The Challenge

Bartier Perry’s existing office layout no longer supported the firm’s future vision. In an industry undergoing rapid change, the workplace needed to move beyond a traditional law firm model to better support collaboration, flexibility, mentoring and a contemporary client experience.

Key challenges included:

  • Limited culture and connection: A traditional closed office layout restricted collaboration, visibility and opportunities for mentoring and knowledge sharing.
  • Dated client and brand experience: The workplace did not reflect Bartier Perry’s high-end, modern and progressive identity, or the welcoming experience it wanted to offer clients.
  • Unsupported flexible work: The existing space lacked choice and adaptability. A shift to open, flexible workspaces was essential for performance and choice.
  • Inefficient space: The firm needed to improve utilisation and achieve long-term lease efficiencies without compromising quality or amenity.
  • Future readiness: As a growing, people-focused firm, Bartier Perry required a workplace that could support evolving ways of working, talent attraction and long-term business success.

Discover

Spaceful began with a deep dive into Bartier Perry’s needs using staff engagement surveys and workshops to uncover insights and shape a bespoke workplace strategy. This ensured the final workplace was not only beautiful and functional but aligned with the firm’s long-term goals and cultural aspirations.

Design

The design draws inspiration from Gadigal Country, referencing the natural colours, textures and forms of Sydney Harbour’s native landscape. An earthy base palette, including sandstone, gum leaves, native florals, is layered with accents of fuchsia, emerald, and terracotta, bringing depth and contemporary energy to the space. Rich materiality, including venetian plaster, travertine, and herringbone oak flooring, add tactility and sophistication throughout.

Key design features include:

  • Work neighbourhoods: Positioned along the perimeter to maximise access to natural light and expansive city views for all staff.
  • Custom design feature: Abstract artworks of the native Hakea flower, designed for Bartier Perry by Spaceful, feature in all client meeting rooms, reinforcing a consistent narrative and connection to land.
  • Intuitive layout: A move away from traditional closed offices, the plan reflects Bartier Perry’s commitment to transparency and collaboration while providing choice. Quiet rooms and support services are discreetly located within the central core to protect focus and functionality.
  • The Alibi Café: The social heart of the workplace, offering sweeping views and a variety of seating options to support collaboration, informal meetings and social connection.
  • Wellbeing: A dedicated, private wellness room provides space for mindful breaks and restoration during the workday.
  • Client experience: A striking cylindrical library anchors the reception area, creating a bold yet welcoming first impression that reflects the firm’s modern, progressive identity.
Deliver

The construction of Bartier Perry’s new workplace at Liberty Place was carefully staged to align with the building’s operational constraints and the client’s move-in schedule. Sustainability and precision were key drivers throughout the build, ensuring all design, quality and environmental targets were achieved.

Key elements of delivery included:

  • Sustainability focus: Low-VOC materials, high-performance acoustic treatments and energy-efficient systems support the building’s 5-Star NABERS target.
  • Precision coordination: Alignment of feature ceilings, curved lighting and services maintains architectural flow and functionality.
  • Custom skylight feature: Installation of a bespoke Newmat stretch ceiling skylight emulates natural daylight and enhances openness in internal zones.
  • Smart technology integration: CBUS and Organic Response systems promote energy efficiency, daylight harvesting and user comfort.
  • Adaptive lighting: Zoned and dimmable lighting in meeting rooms support varied uses, from presentations to video conferencing.

The project was delivered on time and to an exceptional standard, resulting in a refined, future-ready legal workplace that reflects Bartier Perry’s values and supports a modern, agile way of working.
