Sarrita King
Ngurra
Acrylic on Linen
120 x 180 cm
Sarrita is the younger sister to fellow artist, Tarisse King, and daughter to the late highly regarded artist, William King Jungala (1966 – 2007). She inherited her Gurindji and Waanyi ancestry through her father, who came to public attention during the 1960s and 1970s when him and other members of the Gurindji tribe employed by the Wave Hill cattle station led a landmark case which became the first successful land rights claim in Australia. In the Gurindji language ‘Ngurra’ means landscape and ‘Janginyina’ mean lightning. In this painting Sarrita has used her latest technique of fluid line work to tell the story of the Lightning storms rolling across the landscape. Sarrita’s lightning story was the first imagery she painted under guidance of her father, the late, William King Jungala.

Phil Stallard
Hawkesbury Flame Trees with Delicious Sand
Oil on Canvas
137 x 137 cm
Describing himself as an “Emotional Abstractionist”, Phil Stallard dedicates himself to creating exuberantly coloured paintings with Sydney centric iconography. The theme of water has been a prominent reference point for Phil, of which he further draws upon personal memories of Sydney and the Hawkesbury. With an aptitude to push the genre of landscape painting through an interplay between abstraction and realism, Philip’s strength is found in the ability to balance spontaneous painterly marks with careful consideration for geometric compositions. There exists a playful element to each work, whether it be the strength in colour that radiates excitement or the presence of circles, hearts and numbers, which offer a sense of humanness to each piece.
